Your Patient Said Yes. Did They Understand?
Make patient education easier to understand without putting the patient on the spot.
Normalize the check
Tell the patient you are checking how clearly you explained the plan.
Ask for their own words
Use an open prompt that invites the patient to explain what they will do next.
Clarify one gap
Correct the specific part that was unclear with shorter words or a different example.
Check again
Repeat the loop until the important steps are clear, then document what was taught.
Use this before you choose.
If the patient cannot explain the key action in their own words, change the explanation and check again.
Make the guide specific to you.
- What are the two most important actions?
- Which term needs plain language?
- How will I normalize teach-back?
- What will I ask the patient to explain?
- What will I clarify if the response is incomplete?

I want to make sure I explained this clearly. When you get home, how will you [take the medicine, care for the site, or follow the plan]? What will you do if [warning sign]? I may need to explain a part differently, so please tell me what feels unclear.
