ENP Eligibility Route Card

A practical route card for comparing the three current ENP certification eligibility paths.

Can You Become an ER Nurse Practitioner?

Identify the FNP foundation, compare three ENP specialty preparation routes, and leave with exact questions and records to verify before enrolling.

01

Start with the FNP foundation

The current NPCB ENP candidate handbook requires current FNP certification and an active professional nursing license in the United States or a U.S. territory. An emergency department RN role alone does not meet the ENP exam foundation.

02

Route 1: NP practice plus emergency education

Within the past five years, document at least 2,000 direct emergency care clinical practice hours as a certified NP plus 100 hours of emergency-related continuing education, including 30 hours of emergency procedural skills. Keep a dated record of hours and course certificates. BLS, ACLS, and PALS do not count toward the handbook’s procedural skills requirement.

03

Route 2: approved ENP academic program

Complete an approved graduate or postgraduate Emergency Nurse Practitioner academic program. Ask the program to confirm its current approval and show which coursework and clinical experiences support the ENP route. The handbook describes transcript requirements for application and certification release.

04

Route 3: approved emergency fellowship

Complete an approved advanced practice fellowship in emergency care. Ask the fellowship and NPCB how its approval and completion are documented before relying on it as your route.

05

Choose your route using evidence, not the program name

Write down your FNP certification plan, one intended ENP route, the exact proof you will need, and the person who can confirm each unknown. Recheck the current NPCB handbook before applying because eligibility rules can change.

Your three-route ENP eligibility card

Use one row as your plan. Keep the current NPCB handbook open while you verify the details.

Route 3

Proof to save
Written approval confirmation and official fellowship-completion documentation if requested.

This is an organizing aid, not an eligibility determination. Confirm the current rules and your route directly with NPCB.

Use this before you choose.

Keep a route on your shortlist only when you can name the current FNP foundation, identify one NPCB ENP eligibility option, and show how you will document each requirement. If approval or records are unclear, ask the program and NPCB before treating the route as confirmed.

Make the guide specific to you.

  1. FNP foundation: Do I already hold current FNP certification, or what program and exam steps will get me there?
  2. Route choice: Am I considering NP emergency practice plus CE, an approved ENP academic program, or an approved emergency fellowship?
  3. Evidence: Which dated hours, CE certificates, transcripts, or fellowship records would this route require?
  4. Approval check: Who at the program or NPCB can confirm the route and what written proof will I save?
  5. Open question: What requirement is still unverified, and when will I check the current candidate handbook again?

Hello NPCB certification team, I am reviewing the current ENP Candidate Handbook and plan to use the [practice plus CE / academic program / fellowship] route. I hold or plan to obtain current FNP certification. Can you confirm which records I should keep and whether [program or fellowship name, if applicable] is approved for this route? My specific unanswered question is [question]. Thank you.
