“Placement Assistance.” Okay… How Much?
Decode a program’s written placement support promise into named tasks, owners, deadlines, and a fallback before you compare schools.
Translate the label into a task.
“Placement assistance” is a marketing phrase, not a uniform service. A contact list, introductions, active outreach, arranged sites, approval of a student-found site, and backup help are different tasks. Ask which of these the program actually performs for your track and state.
Put an owner next to every step.
Record who identifies possible sites, contacts a preceptor, confirms eligibility, secures an agreement, approves the placement, and checks progress. Mark school, student, shared, or unanswered beside each step. A vague “we help” is still unanswered.
Stress-test the deadline.
Ask what happens if a site declines or a preceptor withdraws near the rotation deadline. Who makes the next contact? When does escalation start? Can the start date or location change, and who tells you? Request the current written policy and the track-specific answer.
Know what the standard does and does not say.
Current CCNE standards require planned clinical practice experiences aligned with preparation and certification requirements. They do not give the phrase “placement assistance” one universal meaning or guarantee that a program will find each student a site. Compare the program’s own written commitments.
Use this before you choose.
Do not treat “placement assistance” as a placement guarantee. Compare programs only after you have a written owner, deadline, and fallback for each major task. If one is unanswered, ask the program to clarify it before you pay a deposit; mark the program as unresolved until the answer is in writing.
Make the guide specific to you.
- Copy the program’s exact written placement-support language and the policy date.
- For site search, outreach, agreements, eligibility review, and final approval, mark the owner: school, student, shared, or unanswered.
- Record the first date each task begins and the deadline for a confirmed site.
- Write the backup owner and escalation step if the first site declines or the preceptor withdraws.
- Save the named contact, source link or email, and any conditions tied to track, state, or location.
Copy the message.
Hi [program contact], I am comparing your [NP track] for [term] in [state]. Could you send the current written clinical-placement policy and identify who handles site search, preceptor outreach, agreements, eligibility review, and final approval? Please include when each step starts, the site-confirmation deadline, and the escalation plan if a site declines or a preceptor withdraws. Thank you.
