Should You Trust an NP Board Pass Rate?
Compare two NP programs by exact exam and track, time period, first-time versus all takers, number tested and passed, missing years, and program completion context.
Start with the denominator.
A 90% result could mean 9 of 10 or 90 of 100 test takers. Both are 90%, but one person changes the smaller cohort much more. These are hypothetical examples, not school results. Ask for the tested and passed counts behind each school claim.
Match the exam and attempt rule.
Record the exact degree, NP population focus, certifying board, and exam. First-time pass rates and rates including repeat test takers answer different questions. Do not compare an FNP first-time result with an AGACNP all-taker result as if they were the same measure.
Match the time period.
Ask whether the number covers one calendar year, one graduating class, or pooled years, and write down all included years. CCNE Standard IV-D allows program outcome reporting over a defined one- or three-year period. A missing year is unknown, not zero.
Read beyond test takers.
A board result counts people who tested. It does not by itself show how many enrolled, completed the program, reached clinical placement, or delayed testing. Request completion and placement context alongside the board result.
Fill the two-program card.
Use one row per school in the downloadable card. Enter source link, date checked, exam, track, period, first-time status, tested, passed, calculated rate, missing years, completion context, and the question you still need answered. Leave blanks as unknown.

Fill one row per program and keep the raw tested and passed counts next to the published percentage.

Compare rates only when exam, population focus, attempt definition, and time period align and the tested/passed counts are disclosed. If one field is missing, label the comparison incomplete and request the underlying data. Even a comparable rate is one signal alongside completion, clinical placement, cost, and fit.
Make the guide specific to you.
- Which exact NP track, degree, certifying board, and exam does each school number describe?
- Does each result count first-time candidates only or all takers?
- What years are included, and are any reporting years missing?
- How many candidates tested and passed in each period, and what rate do those counts produce?
- What completion or placement context is needed before this rate influences my shortlist?

Subject: Board pass rate details for [NP track] [degree] Hi [program contact], I am comparing your [degree] [NP population focus] program for [entry term]. Could you share the certifying board and exact exam behind the published pass rate; whether it counts first-time candidates or all takers; the years included; the number tested and passed for each year or pooled period; and any years with missing data? Could you also link the current program completion outcome and explain whether the result is for this specific track and credential? I am using the counts in a side-by-side comparison. Thank you, [name]
