Is Your NP Program Actually Legit?
Check the exact credential, nursing program accreditation, NP population focus and certification path, state fit, and written proof in a reusable five-step ladder.
1. Name the exact credential and track.
Record the school, campus or online option, degree or post-graduate certificate, NP population focus, entry term, and the state where you will live during clinicals. An MSN or DNP label alone does not tell you which NP role the curriculum prepares you for.
2. Verify nursing program accreditation.
Search the official CCNE, ACEN, or NLN CNEA accredited-program directories. Match the institution and credential level, then record current status and your check date. Institutional accreditation alone is a different question. A program seeking accreditation is not the same as one already accredited. For a post-graduate APRN certificate, confirm the certificate program itself is accredited; ANCC’s 2026 handbook says accreditation of a parallel MSN or DNP track does not substitute.
3. Check certification eligibility for your population focus.
Open the current eligibility page for the specific certifying board and NP population focus. Ask the program to name the exam its graduates pursue and confirm in writing how your exact track meets those requirements. Accreditation alone does not establish eligibility for every NP certification.
4. Check enrollment, clinical, and licensure state fit.
Ask whether the school can enroll and place you for clinical education in your current state, then separately check educational requirements in the state where you plan to seek APRN licensure. NCSBN provides state-by-state licensure requirement links. Record both locations if they differ.
5. Save proof before paying.
Copy the accreditor listing, certification eligibility page, state requirement link, program response, and date checked into the tracker. If any answer is vague, ask for the current written policy for your track, state, and entry term. Then compare placement responsibility, outcomes, and total cost before a deposit.

Do not treat a polished school page as proof. Keep the program on your shortlist only when you can match the exact credential to a current accreditor listing, identify the intended certification pathway, and obtain a written state-specific answer for enrollment, clinical education, and intended licensure. Mark an unanswered step as pending, not passed.
Make the guide specific to you.
- What exact credential, campus, NP population focus, and entry term will appear on my record?
- Which official CCNE, ACEN, or NLN CNEA listing confirms the nursing program and credential level, and what is its current status?
- Which board exam matches this population focus, and where is the current eligibility rule?
- Can I enroll and complete clinicals in my current state, and does the program meet educational requirements where I plan to seek APRN licensure?
- Which dated links and written replies will I save before comparing placement, outcomes, and full cost?
