Will Your NP School Find Your Preceptor?
Copy a five-question email that asks a program to name its placement responsibilities, site approvals, travel expectations, contingency plan, and effect on timing and cost.
Separate responsibility from a guarantee.
CCNE Standard II-C says an accredited program is responsible for providing adequate clinical sites and must tell students the program’s and student’s responsibilities for identifying sites. That does not promise a particular ZIP code, preceptor, or start date. Ask for the current written policy for your track, state, and entry term.
Name every placement task.
Ask who identifies possible sites, contacts preceptors, checks qualifications, approves a site, handles affiliation agreements, and tracks deadlines. AANP’s preceptor resources explain that clinical teaching has defined objectives and supervision, so a name on a list alone is not the full learning plan.
Plan for the site that cancels.
A cancelled preceptor can affect travel, tuition, and program progression. Ask who owns the replacement, when the school intervenes, whether an alternate site is guaranteed, and what the written policy says about delays. Do not infer a guarantee from a general phrase such as “placement assistance.”
Send the email, then compare answers.
Use the five-question message below for each program. Save the reply and the policy link beside your notes. If two answers conflict, ask the program to identify the controlling written policy for your track, location, and entry term.

Compare each program’s reply to the same five questions and save the policy link. Make one copy per program, track, state, and entry term.

Prefer a program that gives a current written policy and names who owns each placement step, including replacement after a cancellation. If the answer stays at “we assist,” ask for a track- and state-specific example before paying a deposit or assuming the school will find your site.
Make the guide specific to you.
- Who identifies sites and preceptors, and which outreach tasks are mine?
- Who approves the preceptor and site, and who handles affiliation agreements?
- What geography, travel, and notice rules apply to my track and state?
- If a placement falls through, who finds a replacement and by when?
- How could a delay affect progression, graduation timing, tuition, and other costs?

Subject: Clinical placement responsibilities for [track], [state], [entry term] Hi [program contact], I am comparing NP programs and would appreciate your current written clinical placement policy for this track, state, and entry term. Could you answer five questions? 1. Who identifies clinical sites and preceptors, and what outreach must I complete myself? 2. Who verifies preceptor qualifications, approves sites, and handles affiliation agreements? 3. What location or travel requirements apply, and when will I know my site? 4. If a preceptor or site cancels, who finds a replacement and by what deadline? 5. If a placement is delayed or unavailable, what happens to my course sequence, graduation timing, tuition, and extra costs? Could you point me to the policy section supporting each answer? Thank you, [name]
