The answer depends on five decisions, not one opinion about how long every nurse should wait. Check the admission rule first. Then assess readiness, specialty fit, finances, and patient-safety development.
Working first is useful when you can name what the job will add. Applying now is defensible when the program and your development plan address what you have not yet learned. Neither path deserves a blanket label.
How Do Formal RN-Experience Rules Vary by NP Program?

What Can RN Work Contribute to Clinical Readiness?
RN work can provide repeated exposure to assessment, communication, prioritization, care coordination, escalation, and system limits. Its value depends on what you did and what feedback you received, not how impressive the unit name sounds.
ANA’s current scope of nursing practice says the depth and breadth of RN practice depend on context, including education, role, experience, certification, setting, population, and lawful authority. It also describes graduate education and supervised clinical training as preparation for advanced roles.
RN practice does not replace graduate NP education. Graduate education does not retroactively make every earlier RN job relevant. Build a gap list around observable tasks and judgment, then ask what the proposed job and NP program each teach and assess.
Does Your RN Job Match the NP Specialty You Want?
A match is based on patient population, acuity, continuity, environment, and responsibilities. One year in a poorly matched role should not be treated as automatic preparation for every focus.

Ask each target program whether your role is required, preferred, accepted, or not relevant to its admission rule. A specialty choice based only on the RN unit can miss the future NP population and work.
How Should You Compare the Financial Paths?
Compare “start now” and “work first” using the same dated inputs. Do not rely on a national salary or debt shortcut.
For each path, record tuition and fees, clinical travel, dependent care, reduced RN shifts, employer tuition support, cash available, borrowing, interest, months to completion, and the conservative after-tax income change expected after graduation.

How Do You Build a Patient-Safety Development Plan?
A safety plan names learning needs before they become hidden assumptions. List the patient groups, changes in condition, communication tasks, clinical judgments, and system risks you have not yet handled with feedback.
AACN’s current 2026 Essentials hub frames nursing education around observable competencies and assessment. Use that principle here. “Worked two years” is elapsed time. “Demonstrated this behavior, received this feedback, and has this remaining gap” is usable evidence.
The current ANCC FNP certification page shows one certification example built around an active RN license, aligned graduate FNP education, graduate APRN coursework, and faculty-supervised clinical hours. It is not a rule for every focus, and its clinical-hour minimum does not settle personal readiness.

Every file needs a source, verification date, open question, and next action. The record does not award a universal score. It shows whether the decision rests on evidence or assumptions.
When Does Applying Now or Waiting Make More Sense?
Waiting makes more sense when a formal rule blocks the application, the specialty remains untested, a specific job would close a named gap, or the added earnings and aid materially improve the conservative financial case.
Applying now may make more sense when the program permits it, your specialty choice has direct evidence, the RN job would add little relevant exposure, delay worsens the financial case, and the program can show how it supervises clinical learning and evaluates development.
