Who can be an NP preceptor depends on the exact program, accreditor standards, certification pathway, state rules, course objectives, NP role and population focus, clinician license and certification, experience, site, patient mix, and conflict policy. A physician, NP, PA, or other clinician may qualify in one course and not another. Only the program can approve the proposed match.

Who Can Be an NP Preceptor?
Start with your program’s current course guide and preceptor form. The allowed profession is only the first question. The proposed clinician must also support the population, experiences, objectives, schedule, and evaluation required for that rotation.
The endorsed Standards for Quality Nurse Practitioner Education address program responsibility for sites and preceptors, faculty assessment and approval, documented qualifications, course alignment, and current agreements. They support a documented review, not one national clinician list.
Why Is There No Universal Clinician List?
Different NP roles and population foci prepare students for different patients and care needs. Courses within one program can also require different experiences. State authority, certifier expectations, accreditor standards, site policy, and faculty judgment can add separate checks.
CCNE publishes the standards currently in effect, but accreditation does not turn every clinician with a certain title into an approved preceptor. ANCC’s current FNP certification page is one certification example connecting eligibility to aligned graduate FNP education and faculty-supervised clinical hours. It is not a preceptor list for every focus or certifier.

Can a Physician Precept an NP Student?
Possibly. The program must permit that physician type for the exact course. Faculty may also review the clinician’s license, experience, patient population, site, schedule, practice relationship, and ability to support the objectives.

Can an NP Precept an NP Student?
Possibly. Matching the letters “NP” is not enough. Review the proposed preceptor’s role, population focus, certification, license, experience, actual patient mix, site, and course fit. An NP approved for one rotation may not meet another course’s needs.

Can a PA or Another Clinician Precept an NP Student?
Only when the exact program and course permit that profession and every other criterion is met. Ask whether the person may cover all hours or only named objectives. Chamberlain’s preceptor resources are one current school example that lists clinician types beside education, licensure, experience, relationship, course, and state requirements.
Your school may use a different list. Record “not permitted,” “permitted with limits,” or “not stated” from its written source.
Can a Supervisor or Family Member Serve as a Preceptor?
The answer depends on program and site conflict rules. A reporting, evaluation, employment, financial, or family relationship may require disclosure or may be restricted. Do not hide the relationship or infer the result.
Ask which policy applies, who decides, and whether a different evaluator or site arrangement changes the answer. Get the decision before using the individual preceptor outreach script.
Is an Active License Enough for Preceptor Approval?
No. A license is one matrix row. Faculty may still assess education, certification, experience, disciplinary status, course objectives, role and population fit, site, patient mix, schedule, conflicts, and agreements.

When Is a Proposed Preceptor Actually Approved?
Approval exists when the program confirms the individual and site for the exact course and term, all required agreements and clearances are complete, and the student receives written permission to begin. Interest from the clinician or employer is not final clearance.
