Why Is There No Universal NP Prerequisite List?
There is no universal list because applicants enter different degree, certificate, population-focus, and licensure pathways. A licensed RN applying to an FNP master’s track has a different academic starting point from a non-nurse entering an immersion DNP or an experienced critical-care RN applying to nurse anesthesia.
Keep admission prerequisites separate from courses taught inside the program. Advanced pathophysiology, pharmacology, and health assessment may appear in an NP curriculum. Their presence in the degree plan does not prove that the school requires them before admission.

Morehouse School of Medicine’s current BSN-to-DNP FNP admissions page lists undergraduate statistics and health assessment with a published minimum grade. These are two source-checked examples, not a national minimum set.
For each target program, capture whether the course must be undergraduate or graduate, whether it must be nursing-specific, and whether the transcript must show a particular title. Ask for confirmation when the wording is not an exact match.
How Do Direct-Entry and Nurse-Anesthesia Prerequisites Differ?
Direct-entry and nurse-anesthesia requirements are pathway-specific and should not be copied into an RN-to-NP comparison. Seattle University’s current advanced-practice nursing immersion prerequisites include multiple science and general prerequisites with content, credits, labs, grades, recency windows, equivalencies, and in-progress rules.
UC Davis Health’s current DNP nurse-anesthesia admissions page provides another bounded example. It publishes pathway-specific science and lab requirements and explains circumstances involving prior BSN preparation, completion, and recency guidance.
Nurse anesthesia is not an NP track. The example belongs here only to prevent applicants from treating all advanced-practice nursing admissions lists as interchangeable.
How Do You Verify Course Equivalency?
Course equivalency requires comparing the transcript course with the target requirement across all six fields. Start with the target program’s current page, then obtain the source course’s official catalog description and syllabus if requested.
Send admissions a concise record:
- Institution and course number.
- Official title and catalog description.
- Term completed or planned.
- Semester or quarter credits.
- Lab format and credits.
- Grade earned or expected.
- Official syllabus or catalog link.
Ask whether that exact course satisfies that exact requirement for the intended term. Save the response with the respondent, date, and any conditions.

Can Old, Online, In-Progress, or Repeated Courses Count?
Each course type depends on the target policy. A program may require a course within a fixed window, prefer a recent course, accept an online format from specified institutions, permit a limited number of in-progress prerequisites, or evaluate all repeated attempts.
Verify these questions before registering:
- Does the time window end at application, admission, or enrollment?
- Is an online lab accepted?
- Must the provider hold a particular institutional status?

How Should Prerequisite Courses Be Added to the Application Timeline?
Prerequisites require reverse planning from both the program deadline and the final-transcript deadline. Include registration availability, course length, final-grade posting, transcript delivery, equivalency review, and any application update window.
Add one ledger row for every course and program. A single anatomy course may be verified for one school, unknown for another, and contradicted for a third because of lab or recency differences.
Place confirmed work in the 12-month NP school application timeline. If the course is meant to address a GPA concern, first use the low-GPA eligibility map to confirm that the target program will evaluate it in the intended decision.
