NP program candidate accreditation status is not accreditation. ACEN says eligibility and candidacy are steps toward initial accreditation. CCNE says new applicant status is an affiliation. Neither is an accreditation award. State approval is a different decision.

What Does NP Program Candidate Accreditation Status Mean?
Candidate means only what the agency using that term says it means. ACEN uses candidacy for a program approved to pursue initial accreditation. ACEN’s current student FAQs state that candidacy is not accreditation and does not guarantee initial accreditation.
Do not translate candidate into almost accredited. Do not apply the ACEN term to a CCNE record. Search the exact program in the ACEN program directory and save the displayed status and date.
Which Status Terms Belong to ACEN?
ACEN defines several different stages and actions.

ACEN’s withdrawal policy separates withdrawal from accreditation from withdrawal from the initial-accreditation process. Record the exact action and effective date.
What Does CCNE New Applicant Status Mean?
CCNE uses new applicant, not ACEN candidate, for the programs listed on its programs seeking accreditation page. CCNE states that new applicant status is an affiliation and is not accreditation.
The page heading “seeking accreditation” describes why the programs are listed. It does not turn seeking into accreditation. Use the separate CCNE accredited-program directory to determine whether the exact nursing degree or post-graduate APRN certificate has an accreditation record.
Do Seeking and Approved Mean Accredited?
No. Seeking is incomplete without the agency’s underlying status. Approved is also incomplete without an object and decision maker.
For example, ACEN may approve a program for candidacy. That means candidacy, not accreditation. A state board may approve a nursing program under state law. ACEN says state approval and accreditation are separate processes.

What Do Warning, Conditions, and Withdrawn Mean?
Warning and Conditions are ACEN terms in this source set. ACEN says Conditions, Warning, and Good Cause are continuing-accreditation stipulations and that the program remains accredited during the stated timeframe. Do not relabel one as candidacy or apply it to CCNE.
Withdrawn needs a full sentence. CCNE’s accreditation actions page separately reports voluntary withdrawals from accreditation, withdrawals tied to closure, and withdrawals from applicant status. Each has a program type and effective date.

What Must the Certifier and State Board Verify?
The certifier decides whether the education and accreditation record meet its examination rules. ANCC’s current certification FAQs say ANCC reviews program accreditation for certification eligibility but is not the nursing education accreditor.
The state board decides its education and licensure requirements. Use the current NCSBN state licensure requirement lookup as a starting point, then ask the intended board when the published rule does not resolve the exact program and status.
